Hopefully this app will be included in iLife '06. It does pretty much what you'd expect it to, so I'm not going into an explanation of every little feature. It is, in effect, a TV-friendly interface to your iApps (iTunes, iPhoto) as well as a new interface to the DVD player and your video collection. However, besides the cheesy sound effects, the program looks pretty slick and looked like it scaled really well to the huge projection screen behind Steve. One thing I noticed, and got annoyed by, were the sound effects that played when you picked one of the main options (Music, Photos, Movies, DVDs). The program is activated similar to Dashboard and goes through some flashy transitions when you bring it up. It would be totally lame if it refused to run on any other model, but I suppose Apple's done wackier things. That and it's only mentioned under the iMac's product page. This is simply conjecture, but there's been absolutely no official talk of it working on any other Apple desktop or portable. Apparently this application is currently limited to new iMacs. However, the fact remains that Apple has a finished product and CenterStage. The name sounds a lot like the open source project CenterStage, no? The interfaces are even a little reminiscent of each other. However, I, personally, would enjoy the integrated video camera because I could post multiple real-time angles of myself on the web. You also can't take an integrated iSight and plug it into your laptop when you travel. Sometimes I like to point mine outside for my web cam or to take a quick photo of something without having to find the point and shoot camera (and load iPhoto, ick). The first disappointing thing about the integrated iSight? You can't point the damn thing at anyone but your own ugly mug.
Are we due for an updated standalone iSight with specs to match the one inside the iMac? That depends on whether or not you believe that Apple would limit this new iSight to the iMac to boost sales. What did get updated on the iMac today?Īn iSight is integrated directly into the bezel of the machine and apparently has better specs than the normal iSight.

It's my own personal belief that Apple always has their main announcement planned and at least two backup announcements that they can swap in if the rumor sites get a whiff of the original plan. Of course, if we knew what we were talking about, we'd probably be making 6 figures in a cushy job at Apple. The news of an updated iMac took a lot of people by surprise since it seemed like the least likely machine to get the treatment. Jobs made his announcement today in three acts and he wasted no time jumping into act one, the iMac.
